Music is a very vibrant component of worship at the Second Congregational Church of Winsted. As Martin Luther stated, "Music is a fair and glorious gift of God," and our music program strives to use that gift to add perspective and beauty to our shared worship experiences.
Congregational singing of traditional hymns of the church is encouraged in the Second Congregational Church of Winsted. Led by our Senior Choir and our Organist, Chris King, as he plays our historic George Hutchings pipe organ, hymns are selected by the Pastor from the two hymnals we have in the pews: Hymns for the Family of God, and The Pilgrim Hymnal. Chris also provides thoughtful and appropriate organ preludes, offertories and postludes each week. When Chris is not available, we are very fortunate to have our Organist Emeritus, Roger Atkins, as our substitute.
The Senior Choir is a dedicated and talented group of volunteers who sing each Sunday from September through June. The music they sing is traditional Protestant choral literature, based on Scripture, hymn tunes, classical works, spirituals and folk melodies in varied styles from throughout history. The Senior Choir Director is Will Minton. In additional to the anthems, hymns and responses the Senior Choir sings during Sunday worship services, the choir participates each year in other presentations such as the Annual Community Benefit Concert which our Music Committee sponsors to benefit the local Food Bank and Open Door Soup Kitchen, and the Fall Foliage Vesper Service at Colebrook's Church in the Wildwood. In addition to making music together, the Senior Choir enjoys other opportunities for fellowship throughout the year at pot-luck dinners, hymn-sings and social events.
The Senior Choir meets each Sunday morning at 8:15 AM to rehearse. There is no rehearsal on evenings during the week, and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in joining the Senior Choir, please call the Church Office at (860) 379-4766, or speak to Choir Director Will Minton at church any Sunday morning.
