Because God has directly revealed Himself to mankind through the Scriptures, the Second Congregational Church of Winsted desires to clearly affirm, teach and live out the core biblical doctrines of the Christian faith. We also realize that sincere biblically based Christians can have disagreements about secondary points of doctrine, which the Bible gives us liberty about. (1Cor 3:1ff, 8:1ff) Thus we also affirm that old church axiom, "in primary things conformity, in secondary things liberty and in all things charity."
One of the great problems that has troubled modern society is the belief that doctrine isn't important. Our individualistic, anti-intellectual, commercial driven culture constantly tempts us away from Christ with the false man-centered doctrine that we can believe anything we want as long as we try to be a nice person.
This idea, that truth is relative to the individual, is a most dangerous teaching. For those who affirm it, they are unwittingly dogmatically decreeing that God either hasn't told us what is true, or that His Word isn't understandable. True Christianity of course rejects this and believes that God has spoken with clarity through the crucified Christ as revealed in the Bible.
If God hasn't clearly spoken, then why does the Bible persistently warn the church to be on guard against false teachers?1 As the Lord Jesus Himself rebuked, "But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men. Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men." (Mark 7:7-8).
To cite but a few biblical passages that warn about false teachers: Lev 4:13; Ps 5:6; 52:3; 62:4; 119:163; Is 9:17; 29:13; 32:6; Jer 5:31; 14:14; 23:25-32; 27:9; 29:8; Ezek 13:1-23; 22:28; Hab 2:18; Zech 10:2; Matt 7:15; 12:34; 22:29; 24:11,24; Mark 7:8-13; 13:22; Luke 6:26; John 20:9; Acts 13:6; 15:24; 20:29-30; 2Cor 11:13,26; Gal 1:6-7; 2:4; 5:10-12; Eph 4:13; Phil 1:15; 3:2; Col 2:8,23; 1Tim 1:3-13; 4:1-3,6; 6:3,20-21; 2Tim 3:13-4:5; Titus 1:9-2:2; 2Pet 2:1; 1John 2:18; 4:1-6; Rev 2:2,6,20; 13:14; 16:13; 19:20; 20:10
